What initially inspired you to become an artist, and how did you develop your unique style?

I embarked on my artistic journey at the tender age of 2, wielding crayons and fingerpaints with enthusiasm. As the years unfolded, my passion for creative expression only deepened, leading me to the realization that a life immersed in the arts was my true calling. Although I do not believe I have a specific style as I intend to keep evolving with my artistic style, I do however believe my unique style is a reflection of my Urbanic South Asian Identity and exploration of human relationships

In terms of subject matter, what themes or motifs do you frequently explore in your work, and what draws you to these topics?

With my artistic endeavors, I strive to delve into the depths of my identity as a South Asian woman. My focus often gravitates toward dismantling the complexities of human physicality and celebrating the rich diversity it embodies. I am intrigued by the intricate and transcendent connections between ourselves and the world that surrounds us, delving into the realms of intimacy and exploration. Through my work, I intend to navigate landscapes of environments and the beings that inhabit them, seeking to unravel the narratives that shape our shared existence.

As both an Interior Architect and Illustrator, how do these two roles intersect and influence each other in your creative process?

As an Interior Architect and Illustrator, my dual roles intersect and influence each other in many ways, enriching my creative process and informing my approach to design. My experience as an Interior Architect imbues my illustrations with a heightened sense of spatial awareness and functionality. I draw upon my knowledge of architectural principles, spatial planning, and building codes to create illustrations that not only captivate the imagination but also consider the practical aspects of design. The symbiotic relationship between my roles as an Interior Architect and Illustrator allows me to approach projects with a multidimensional perspective, blending creativity with functionality and transcending the boundaries of traditional design.

Could you describe a specific piece of artwork that encapsulates the essence of your artistic philosophy?

I wouldn’t say I have a specific but my ongoing series ‘Home’ is a visual memoir intricately woven to capture the tender and poignant childhood anecdotes of my journey as a South Asian child of the diaspora. Within its vibrant tapestry, ‘Home’ stitches together a rich array of memories, both sweet and savory, that have sculpted the very essence of my identity.

Can you tell us about a project or illustration that you found particularly challenging or rewarding?

Working on the oil painting "Kanchey," dedicated to my grandparents, was a deeply enriching experience. Encapsulating the shared memory of an entire generation presented a significant challenge. It required a delicate balance of reverence and interpretation, a nuanced understanding of the stories and emotions. Immersed in the process, I found profound inspiration in the stories and memories shared by my elders. The art piece became a tribute, a visual narrative echoing the richness of their lives. Capturing their essence on canvas was not only a creative endeavor but also a poignant journey of connection and remembrance. As the painting took shape, I felt a sense of fulfillment, knowing that I was preserving their legacy through art, immortalizing their stories and spirit for generations to come.

How do you incorporate feedback from critics and audiences into your artistic practice, and how do you balance this feedback with your artistic intuition?

Incorporating feedback from critics and audiences into my artistic practice is an integral part of my growth as an artist. I approach feedback with an open mind, recognizing that it offers valuable insights and perspectives that can help me refine my work and deepen its impact. Ultimately, I evaluate the feedback about my artistic intuition and intentions. While I value the input of others, I also trust my instincts and creative intuition as a guiding force in my work. I embrace feedback as a catalyst for growth and exploration, integrating constructive insights that align with my artistic goals while staying true to my unique voice and vision.

How do you stay motivated and inspired despite any setbacks or creative blocks you may encounter?

One way I stay motivated is by maintaining a sense of purpose and passion for my art. Reminding myself of why I started creating in the first place and reconnecting with the joy and fulfilment it brings helps me persevere through challenges. I also find inspiration in exploring new experiences, whether it's visiting art exhibitions, immersing myself in nature, or engaging with other forms of creative expression like music or literature. It is unsuspecting but sometimes I am just dehydrated or need fruits to clear my creative blocks.

How do you feel about exhibiting your artworks with The Holy Art Gallery?

Being represented by The Holy Art Gallery would be an incredible opportunity for me as an artist. Their reputation for curating exceptional artwork and providing a platform for artists to showcase their work would offer valuable exposure and recognition for my creations. I would be honoured to exhibit my artworks with The Holy Art Gallery and to contribute to their mission of fostering meaningful connections between artists, audiences, and the divine through the medium of art.

Looking ahead, what are your long-term goals and aspirations as an artist, and how do you plan to achieve them?

As an artist, I aspire to continuous growth, meaningful impact, and artistic excellence. My goals include deepening artistic mastery through ongoing learning and innovation, building a diverse body of work reflecting authenticity and continuity, and actively seeking opportunities to exhibit and collaborate globally. I am committed to engaging audiences through various platforms, inspiring dialogue about art and society. Additionally, I aim to use my art for social change and cultural enrichment. Alongside pursuing my passions, I strive for a sustainable career, embracing challenges and remaining open to new possibilities, contributing to the cultural landscape in meaningful ways.

What role does emotion play in your creative process, and how do you aim to evoke specific feelings or reactions from those who view your drawings?

I believe that art has the power to evoke profound emotional responses, connecting with viewers on a visceral level and a wide range of feelings and reactions. In my creative process, I draw upon my own emotions and experiences as a source of inspiration and authenticity. Whether I'm exploring themes of love, joy, sadness, or contemplation, I strive to infuse my artwork with genuine emotion and sincerity, tapping into universal truths and human experiences that resonate across cultural and societal boundaries. I believe in the power of storytelling as a means of connecting with audiences on an emotional level. Through my drawings, I aim to convey narratives and evoke empathy, inviting viewers to step into the worlds I create and experience the emotions and experiences of the characters depicted.
